Migraine

If you suffer from migraines, you know how debilitating they can be and sometimes there seems to be nothing that can help. But new tinted spectacle lenses are offering hope to migraine sufferers.

Migraines and headaches can be triggered by many factors- hormones or things we eat or drink, but for a lot of migraine sufferers, the stimulus is often visual i.e. fluorescent lights, reading text, sunlight, flickering images, computers, etc. Migraines caused by such visual stimuli are often due to a condition called Scotopic Sensitivity, or Meares-Irlen syndrome and sufferers can be helped by wearing precision tinted lenses during these activities.

Alisdair Buchanan explains ‘ when reading or looking at a computer screen the eye is being asked to adjust constantly, looking from black letters on the white background and back again. In some people, this can lead to over stimulation of the brain and cause headaches or migraines. The same thing can happen with fluorescent lights and sunlight. When we use a specific tinted lenses in front of the eyes, it can help block out the particular wavelengths of light that cause this overstimulation and therefore can reduce the headaches. The precise tint needed for each person varies but is easy to measure using the specialist equipment we have in practice. We are one of the few places in the South East to offer this service and have clients that travel hundreds of miles to get relief from their symptoms.’

A study into the effects of precision tinted lenses on migraines found that 75% of users found a significant reduction in their migraines and 25% could stop their medication altogether.  So if your migraines appear to be triggered by visual stimulus book an appointment today and let us help you.
